A recent opinion article in the New York Post written by an Orthodox rabbi made a powerful statement; it is not anti-semitic to criticize meddling by billionaire Goerge Soros in politics but, rather, it is a mitzvah (Torah imperative) to oppose his radical left-wing initiatives.

Rabbi Dov Fischer is the western regional vice president of Coalition for Jewish Values, n organization of Orthodox rabbis. In his article, Rabbi Fischer rejected the claim that criticism of Soros’ programs was based in anti-Semitism. He suggested that under the leadership of Jason Greenblatt, the Anti-Defamation League was motivated by a left-wing agenda and not by a desire to combat Jew-hatred. As such, it would oppose challenges to Soros even when those challenges were policy-based. 

The rabbi even went so far as to “condemn Soros as perhaps the most despicable person in public affairs.”

Rabbi Fischer singled out Soros’ funding of left-wing soft-on-crime prosecuting attorneys.

“Disbursing tens of millions of dollars, Soros has funded local campaigns across America to elect progressive district attorneys who agitate for the lethal cocktail of defunding police and decriminalization,” Rabbi Fischer wrote. “These prosecutors tend not to prosecute property crimes or severe misdemeanors. Instead, they purposefully undercharge felonies as misdemeanors, then plead them down to disorderly-conduct violations.”

His contention could not be more accurate. Last month, Breitbart News published an article documenting the effects of funding by multi-billionaire George Soros on the rise in crime, most notably violent crime, in the US. The article listed nine prosecutors who received direct support from Soros-funded political action committees (PACs) and super PACs. It also listed three who had received indirect support from Soros. A further list of Soros-backed prosecutors, current through 2019, is available through Influence Watch. 

In 2018, the Los Angeles Times reported that Soros had funded at least 21 local prosecutorial campaigns while adding that the full extent of his influence on such races was unknown because some of his contributions flowed to non-profit organizations and “dark money” groups rather than directly to campaigns. 

The article went on to cite a marked rise in crime in many of the cities benefitting from Soros-aided prosecutors. One example given was Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón who has implemented drastic reforms. Another Breitbart article documented attempts by the mainstream media to obfuscate the direct correlation between the rise in crime and Democrat-run cities. 

“If it’s not ‘anti-Catholic’ to condemn disastrous policies advocated by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it is not anti-Semitic to condemn Soros, who most significantly finances campaigns to elect such lawless DAs,” Rabbi Fischer wrote. “Yes, there can be criticism that crosses a line, like a cartoon depicting Soros with a Jewish religious symbol like a yarmulke. Still, Judaism as a religion and George Soros do not intersect.”

“Soros is destroying our nation’s foundational principles and our democratic institutions. It’s a patriotic mitzvah to stand up and say so,” he concluded.

As of February 2018, Soros had a net worth of $8 billion, having donated more than $32 billion to the Open Society Foundation. Domestically, the OSF is a strong supporter of the left-wing and the Democratic Party, especially through its support of Priorities USA Action, the Democratic Party’s largest super PAC. 

Soros has unquestionably changed the face of US politics, bolstering the left-wing with his deep pockets. He donated over $1 million to Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign and over $8 million to Democratic campaigns during Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful; bid for the White House. In 2020, Soros was one of Joe Biden’s largest contributors, donating at least $500,000 to his campaign.

These efforts are not universally supported and in September 2017, a petition to have him branded a “domestic terrorist” garnered over 100,000 signatures in two weeks.

The OSF funds a number of anti-Israel organizations that deny the legitimacy of Israel and Jewish sovereignty, and are involved in demonization campaigns. Soros has compared Israel to Nazi Germany.

Soros, born Jewish, lived through the Holocaust in Hungary, surviving as a courier for the Jewish council that identified and kept track of the Jews for the Nazi occupiers. He later assumed a fake name, and his father paid a Christian government official to take the boy in as his “godson.”
