On his Facebook page Monday, Israeli President Shimon Peres sent a message of peace to the Islamic community at the outset of their observance of Ramadan.

Peres wrote his message in Arabic, Hebrew and English. In the message her stressed that Ramadan was not simply an Islamic holiday but “a celebration to all of us”.

Peres appealed to the commonality in all of the major religions represented in the Holy Land saying, “After all, we are coming from the same family the family of Abraham, and after all, you, us, the Christians, all of us, we pray to the Lord to stop the bloodshed to let the children be safe at home to make it unnecessary for the mothers to cry, to suffer.

In addition to the written text the President sent his well-wishes in a YouTube video in English.

Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu also sent well-wishes to the Islamic community for Ramadan this week, however, included in his address was a direct request to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table.

The PA has refused to sit down with Israel to negotiate peace since Abbas walked out of meetings in 2010 after Netanyahu instituted an unprecedented 10-month settlement construction freeze, despite the policy’s unpopularity among the Israeli public.
