Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil-doers, children that deal corruptly; they have forsaken the LORD, they have contemned the Holy One of Israel, they are turned away backward. (Isaiah 1:4)

On Monday, the Palestinian Authority announced that it was canceling a peace negotiation meeting with Israel following a violent riot in Kalandiya which left three rioters dead, according to the Jerusalem Post. The Israelis and the PA had met, reportedly, before the clash with the Palestinian protesters and the IDF began, the fourth such clandestine meeting in the ongoing peace talks between the two sides.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israeli security forces arrive in Kalandiya in order to arrest a terrorist suspect. The soldiers immediately came under heavy attack by hundreds of Palestinians. The rioters threw rocks, Molotov cocktails, and bricks at the soldiers, who then opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas. The ensuing violence resulted in the death of three rioters.

Shop-RoshHashana-300x250According to The Times of Israel the IDF said soldiers rushed to the scene after the Border Police officers came under attack. It said soldiers opened fire after they felt their lives were in “imminent danger.”

“Large violent crowds such as this, which significantly outnumber security forces, leave no other choice but to resort to live fire in self-defense,” said military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner.

Video images from the scene showed two IDF jeeps being ambushed by Palestinians on rooftops and at street level, hurling large rocks and other heavy items from multiple directions.

The wanted suspect, said by the IDF to be a terrorist, was arrested and taken for questioning.

The American Foreign Press than quoted a Palestinian official as saying, “the meeting that was to take place in Jericho…today was cancelled because of the Israeli crime committed in Kalandiya today,” the official told AFP.

A spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the killings, saying that they, along with continued settlement plans, “are a clear message of the true Israeli intentions toward the peace process.”

Nabil Abu Rudaineh hinted that the peace talks could be in danger, stating “There is going to be negative repercussions to these acts.” Abu Rudaineh called on the US to intervene and prevent the collapse of peace efforts.

However, according to The Times of Israel, the US State Department denied any stagnation in the peace talks. “I can assure you that no meetings have been cancelled,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf was quoted as saying. “The parties are engaged in serious and sustained negotiations.”

According to a report on Israel’s Channel 2, Israel has made clear in the talks – which have been described as “serious” – that it was willing to talk about land swaps and the Jordan Valley.
