Arabic-language news site Al-Ahram reported that Egyptian police placed a bird under arrest on Friday on suspicion the animal was spying for Israel. Originally, the bird was reported to be a duck, as was picked up by most English-language news sources, but the site subsequently correct the report, saying it was, in fact, a stork.

The bird was first noticed by a fisherman in the Qena region, as it waded in the nile with other birds. The stork caught the man’s attention because a device was attached to its wing. Police elected to investigate whether the device was being used to gather electronic intelligence on behalf of Israel.

As it turns out, the device is a French wildlife tracking unit, aimed at assisting French scientists in monitoring the stork’s migration patterns, according to Qena veterinary services chief Ayman Abdullah. Abdullah told the Associated Press that it stopped working once the stork crossed the French border.

This incident is one of several in which Israel has been accused of using animals and birds to spy on or otherwise harm its neighbors. Egyptian paper El-Fagr reminded its readers, Israel “previously spied on Saudi Arabia, Turkey and neighboring countries using trained birds of prey.” In May 2012, Turkey accused Israel of using a bird to spy on it, while in December of that year, Darfur officials claimed to have found an Israeli “spy eagle.” This past January, a carrier pigeon was investigated in the Qalyubia region of Egypt, north of Cairo, after it was found to be carrying a message on one leg and microfilm on the other.

Other strange accusations have included the 2010 claim that the Mossad, Israel’s secret service, sent GPS-controlled attack sharks into Egyptian waters, and charges by the Palestinian Authority that Israel sent attack boars and anti-Arab rats into its territories.
