A group of masked youths on Saturday night threw Molotov cocktails at a synagogue in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, Allan Stutzinsky, chairman of the Jewish Assembly in Gothenburg, told the TT Swedish news agency. There were a number of local Jewish youths at a party held inside the synagogue.

Dvir Maoz, the World Bnei Akiva emissary in Gothenburg, said the attack took place after 10 PM, and described looking out from inside the synagogue lobby and seeing “a ball of fire” flying at the building.

“The guards saw it in the security cameras and called police right away. The children were stressed, it was the first time they had ever experienced a terrorist attack near them,” Maoz said.

The flames, luckily, did not spread, according to Stutzinsky, because light rain was falling. The Jews inside took shelter in the basement.

Police at the scene confirmed that Molotov cocktails had been thrown at the synagogue building. According to TT, several police units are still conducting an investigation of the synagogue area.

On Friday night, about 200 protesters in Möllevångstorget, south-western Sweden, “scandalized” by President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, took up the logical response of threatening violence against Swedish Jews. A message screened at the demonstration read: “We have announced the intifada from Malmö (half a mile away). We want our freedom back, and we will shoot the Jews.”

Police did not send patrols to control the rally Friday, nor a second rally on Saturday, and it is unclear, according to local media, whether either rally had been issued a permit.
