The IDF Tuesday intercepted and destroyed an Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operated by the Lebanese terror organization Hezbollah that entered the demilitarized zone of the Golan Heights near Israel’s border with Syria.

An Israeli Air Force fighter jet fired a single Patriot missile at the UAV – an intelligence collection drone – from Israel’s Golan Heights. It downed the drone in Syria’s Quneitra before it could enter Israeli airspace.

“The IDF will not allow the infiltration of Iranian elements, Hezbollah, Shiite militias or [Islamic] Jihad to the Golan Heights. We will respond and react immediately to any such attempt,” the IDF spokesman stated, reported Yediot Ahronot.

The downing of the terror organization’s drone follows several previous instances in which Israel used Patriot missiles to intercept drones from Syria, including in April and July 2016.

The IDF has also responded to multiple incidents of errant fire from the Syrian civil war hitting Israel during the past several months.

The Patriot missile defense system was initially given to Israel by the United States in 1991 to defend against Iraqi Scud missiles during the first Gulf War. Today the system is still considered the most advanced air defense system in responding to threats from ballistic missile programs like Iran’s.
