Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed his government to send emergency humanitarian aid to Sierra Leone following a deadly flood and landslide that has killed hundreds so far.

“The prime minister has ordered the Foreign Ministry to extend aid to Sierra Leone in any way and as soon as possible,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.

While Israel does not have an embassy in Sierra Leone, Netanyahu’s office said that Israel will send medicine, clean water, blankets and other items through its embassy in Senegal.

Reports from the International Red Cross indicate that at least 312 people have been killed and more than 2,000 have been left homeless in flooding and mudslides near Sierra Leone’s capital of Freetown.

Israel has been developing closer relations with several West African countries including Sierra Leone. The country’s President Ernest Bai Koroma visited Israel in January.
