A recent survey by online dating site MissTravel found that American men were most attracted to women who spoke English with an Israeli accent. Women, on the other hand, were most attracted to men who spoke English with a British accent.
“Accents have a tendency of taking our minds to unknown, and exotic places, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to the speaker,” stated Brandon Wade, CEO and founder of MissTravel. “As Americans, we often associate British accents with intelligence and class, both desirable qualities for a mate, while Israeli accents conjure up images of the Mediterranean.”
Though some people believe they do not speak with an accent, every person has one. “Everyone who speaks has an accent which was created through several factors,” noted Roni Segal, academic adviser for The Israel Institute of Biblical Studies, a company which offers language courses online, to Breaking Israel News. “Accents are a product of how, when, where and from whom a person learned to speak.”
Segal explained, however, that it is possible to change the way one speaks, as well as one’s accent. “Actors do this all of the time,” she said. “Additionally, many people vary their accent depending on with whom they are speaking, sometimes even unconsciously.”
According to 1,423 American women surveyed, men with the following accents are considered the sexiest:
1. British
2. Scottish
3. Spanish
4. Australian
5. American Southern
According to 1,164 American men surveyed, women with the following accents are considered the sexiest:
1. Israeli
2. Colombian
3. Australian
4. French
5. American Southern
Several tools are suggested for improving one’s accent in the language of choice. These include:
1. Exposing oneself to native speakers of a language and listening to media using that language.
2. Making friends with people who speak the language in order to increase vocabulary and develop the accent sought after.
3. Take the time and persevere while learning a new language and be brave and humble while making mistakes.
4. Repeat phrases and words again and again in order to become comfortable with the sound of the language.
“From our experience of teaching people all over the world Hebrew and other languages online, mastering a language along with the proper accent does take time,” continued Segal. “We have thousands of success stories since we use native speakers to teach languages to people along with the recommended guidelines of repetition and practice in a patient and non-threatening atmosphere.”
Anyone can learn a language and develop a desired accent over time if they are determined and get enough exposure to the language of choice. With a bit of effort, one might even be able to sound like Wonder Woman!
