IDF jets reportedly struck a weapons shipment in Syria intended for terror group Hezbollah overnight on Tuesday, according to Lebanese media.

Several targets near the Syrian capital of Damascus were hit around 3:30 am on Wednesday morning, including a weapons convoy apparently headed for Lebanon-based terror organization Hezbollah, an avowed enemy of Israel.

Other targets struck belonged to the Assad regime’s forces, the Syrian Army 3rd Division, media reported. Weapons caches were also blown up.

A spokesperson for the nearby city of Yarboud told media that Israeli jets had fired six missiles at the targets, while anonymous security sources said that only two missiles had been fired.

Reports said that Israeli Air Force craft approached from Lebanon so as not to encounter Russian defense systems operating in Syria.

The IDF refused to comment, neither confirming nor denying the attack, in adherence to a long-standing policy not to respond to foreign reports. However, it is widely understood that Israel regularly takes military action to stop Hezbollah from getting weapons.

“Israel does what is necessary first and foremost to maintain public security and defend our sovereignty, as we try to prevent the smuggling for sophisticated weapons, military equipment, and weapons of mass destruction from Syria to Hezbollah,” Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said following a similar report in December.
