Kansas Congressman Views Jerusalem’s Security Situation Up Close

U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas) recently visited Israel where he received a detailed and first-hand security evaluation of what transpires on the ground.

During his trip which took place between 10 – 15 November, Pompeo, a West Point graduate and US army veteran, had the opportunity to discuss the current security matters with both IDF and police officers. Pompeo was provided access to unedited video footage of the the attacks deemed too graphic for public consumption.

The U.S. congressman also toured the Old City in Jerusalem, where he was escorted by military personnel to an observation post wherein he was apprised of the the geopolitical complexities of the area.

Following the visit, Pompeo issued a press release at the beginning of December where he shared his observations regarding the reactions of Israeli security forces to the spate of Palestinian violence which has included multiple stabbings, car rammings and shootings against Israeli civilians and security officers.

“I recently travelled to Israel where I was briefed on the unconscionable acts of violence being committed against innocent Israeli civilians and police officers. During my trip, I met with Israeli civilians and police officers, who are on the front lines of protecting Israeli citizens and also face the dual threat of being targeted by attackers attempting to kill innocent people going about their daily lives,” stated Pompeo.

After his condemning the terrorist attacks perpetrated against Israelis “solely because they are Jewish”, Pompeo, now in his third term as the member of the House of Representatives representing the state of Kansas, extolled the responses of the Israeli people and the Israeli security forces: “I can tell you that the Israeli people and the Israeli National Police are demonstrating admirable restraint in the face of unspeakably cruel attacks,” Pompeo said.

A self-proclaimed friend of Israel, he further lauded Israeli officers for their professionalism and expressed the need to “stand with our ally Israel and put a stop to terrorism. Ongoing attacks by the Palestinians serve only to distance the prospect of peace,” he concluded.

The visit was prompted by a tour undertaken by Israeli Police Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld, who delivered a series of security briefings in Washington DC and Manhattan in November.

The visit was coordinated and organized by the Elite branch of Our Soldiers Speak, an American-based NGO which sends active members of the IDF and police force, from rank of Sergeant to General, to the campuses and communities of the English-speaking world.

During Superintendent Rosenfeld’s tour, he also provided similar security briefings to various Congressmen such as Peter Roskam who serves as a co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, Ted Deutch and Mark Meadows.
