Iranian Missile

Iran presented its new surface-to-surface, short-range ballistic missile on during the country’s Defense Industry Day, claiming a 500 kilometer range and pinpoint accuracy.

With one of the largest missile programs in the Middle East, certain aspects of Iran’s defense industry are limited by the agreement with the P5+1 powers pertaining to Iran’s nuclear program. Despite the agreement, Iranian officials have declared that they will not abide by the rules that limit their nuclear ability, claiming peace through power is their guiding principle.

The new missile, the Fateh 313, is the 6th generation of the solid-propellant Fateh-series which are considered the most accurate Iranian missiles. Iranian sources explained to the media that the new missile is made of composite materials, making it lighter in weight than previous versions, uses synthetic fuel and is fitted with new sensors. It has been successfully tested and is ready for mass production.

Iran purportedly has missiles with ranges of up to 2,000 kilometers which are capable of striking both Israel and Saudi Arabia. Iranian defense officials claim that the production of the Fateh 313 missile does not come under restrictions of the terms of the nuclear agreement.

Under the terms of the recent accord, Iran is barred from developing ballistic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. Also included in the deal is a condition requiring the approval of the United Nations Security Council for the transfer to Iran of any ballistic missile technology during the next eight years. The United States has promised to veto any such requests. An arms embargo on conventional weapons also remains in place, preventing their import and export for five years.

“Iran’s military capacities, especially ballistic missiles, are strictly defensive and, as they have not been conceived to carry nuclear weapons, they are outside the scope and competence of the Security Council resolution,” the ministry wrote in a statement.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to implementing its commitments… so long as world powers keep their side of the agreement to lift sanctions in exchange for guarantees that Tehran will not develop a nuclear program,” the statement said.

“We will buy, sell and develop any weapons we need and we will not ask for permission or abide by any resolution for that,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a speech at the ceremony, which was broadcast live on state television. “We can negotiate with other countries only when we are powerful. If a country does not have power and independence, it cannot seek real peace.”

“The Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force will hold a large-scale ballistic missiles war-games soon,” Brigadier Gen. Amirali Hajizadeh said, according to the state-run Fars news agency.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has made public statements claiming that his organization has had Fateh 110 missiles that can reach Tel Aviv since 2006, and in April, the Israeli Air Force struck depots in Western Syria that allegedly held such missiles.

Iran has no qualms about providing missiles to the enemies of Israel, and this new weapon wold be able to strike anywhere in Israel from  Lebanon. It should be noted that Israel was struck by four rockets last week in an Iranian backed attack.
