Mike Huckabee Out-Trumps Donald Trump

U.S. Presidential politics is, indeed, a wild media extravaganza.  After several weeks during which billionaire businessman and Republican candidate Donald Trump has been single-handedly stealing the show with his bombastic, but apparently popular statements about illegal immigrants and about Senator John McCain’s military service, fellow candidate and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is now trying to break through the pack with a bold statement of his own about the Iran nuclear deal.

Not mincing words, Huckabee charged that because of an “idiotic” nuclear deal with Tehran, President Obama is essentially marching Israelis “to the door of the oven”, a not so subtle allusion to the Holocaust. If the goal was just to get attention, the response attacks have certainly been fast and furious. Leading the pack, Congresswoman and head of the Democratic National Committee Deborah Wasserman-Schultz immediately called on Huckabee to apologize, scolding him for what she called “cavalier analogies” to Nazi death camps.BIN-OpEd-Experts-300x250(1)

“This rhetoric, she proclaimed, “While commonplace in today’s Republican presidential primary, has no place in American politics.”

Jumping on the Democratic bandwagon, the ostensibly non-partisan Anti-Defamation League issued the following statement:

“Whatever one’s views of the nuclear agreement with Iran – and we have been critical of it, noting that there are serious unanswered questions that need to be addressed – comments such as those by Mike Huckabee suggesting the president is leading Israel to another Holocaust are completely out of line and unacceptable.”

Unlike Wasserman -Schultz, who deftly exploits her Jewish identity for unholy electoral purposes, but has made a name for herself as a staunchly loyal and brazenly vocal spokeswoman of the increasingly left-wing Democratic Party, ADL considers itself to be objective. The wealthy organization claims no political allegiances, proudly citing its statedmission to combat anti-Semitism.

Frankly, I’m unconvinced. As a Jew who has suffered from anti-Semitism, but also understands the rough and tumble of politics, I strongly believe that the ADL is way off-base, even disingenuous on this issue. Its quick attack on the conservative Huckabee, after years of silence aboutPresident Obama’s well-documented hostility towards Israel and its leaders, reveals a disturbing political bias that needs to be addressed openly.

Mike Huckabee is one of the greatest friends of Israel in American politics today. A frequent visitor to Israel, often as a leader of enthusiastic tourgroups, he has stood firm in his support for the rebuilding of the Land of Israel under Israel’s sovereignty after 1,900 years of exile. Furthermore, he has stood out as a beacon of light among American politicians in his courageous oppo‎sition to a “Palestinian” terrorist state in the biblical heartland of Israel.

As for Huckabee’s supposedly controversial statement about Iran, does anyone who has heard the wild rants of Iran’s leadership honestly doubt that their intention is to utterly destroy the Jewish State? The nuclear annihilation of Israel would be merely a simpler and more efficient means to the same end that the Nazis tried to complete in the Holocaust. Huckabee’s use of Holocaust imagery may be disturbing, but sometimes, disturbing imagery is needed to make a more disturbing point about a very real existential danger.

It’s no accident that almost all Israelis, left and right, are united in their fierce oppo‎sition to this dangerous agreement. ADL notwithstanding, this is not about political hyperbole and intrigue, although bold statements by a candidate admittedly will often bring attention. No it’s not about politics, but it is about Israel’s very survival. Mike Huckabee should be commended for standing firmly with Israel in this fateful hour. And ADL should apologize for its knee-jerk criticism of one of Israel’s finest friends.
