For the first time in 2015, and on the same day Israel celebrated its 67th Independence Day, a code-red rocket siren sounded Thursday in the southern Israeli town of Sderot and other communities on the border with Gaza.

While there were no reports from local residents of any explosions around the time of the siren at 9 p.m. Israel time, the IDF investigated the siren and determined that one rocket was fired at Israel from Gaza, the Hebrew edition of Yedioth Ahronoth reported.

The rocket reportedly exploded in an open area.

The IDF responded to the attack by striking the site of the rocket fire in northern Gaza late Thursday evening.

IDF Spokesperson Peter Lerner wrote on Twitter: “In response to rocket attack against Israel, the #IDF targeted a terrorist infrastructure in northern #Gaza.”

The last time Hamas fired a rocket at Israel from Gaza was in December 2014. While military officials believe Thursday’s attack was not ordered by Hamas but rather independent operatives, Israel still holds Hamas responsible for the attack since they are the ruling body in the Strip.
