Saudi, Egypt, UAE distance themselves from Biden over Iran deal, Arab expert warns

Why do nations assemble, and peoples plot vain things; kings of the earth take their stand, and regents intrigue together against Hashem and against His anointed?

Middle Eastern pundits frequently “credit” former President Barack Obama with paving the way for the Abraham Accords by pushing through the Iran deal, thereby disenfranchising the Arab nations in the Middle East who, along with Israel, saw the deal as empowering the despotic Iranian regime. Rather than take his cue from this, President Biden has, from the moment he entered office, pursued a path to reinstate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) at any cost. Not unexpectedly, this week, four Arab nations in the region responded by issuing a statement expressing displeasure over this path.

In a report published by the Gatestone Institute, journalist Khaled Abu Toameh wrote that the Arab Quartet Committee — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt, issued a statement on March 9 expressing “deep concern over Iran’s ballistic missile program and ongoing support for terrorism.”

“Iran continues to interfere in the internal affairs of Arab countries and play a role in sowing sectarian discord among them by supporting and arming terrorist groups such as the Houthi and Hezbollah militias,” the statement read. “Iran poses a threat to the security of Arab states and impedes regional and international efforts to resolve issues and crises in the region through peaceful means…Iran and its terrorist militias are continuing to create chaos and instability, especially in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Lebanon.”

They also expressed a strong desire that any agreement should be seen as temporary and should require stronger monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“The Arabs are also worried that when Iran obtains nuclear weapons, they will sooner or later find their way into the hands of its terrorist proxies and other terrorist groups, including Islamic State (ISIS) and Al-Qaeda,” Toameh wrote.

Iranian drones have been used to devastating effect by the Houthis in Yemen against Saudi Arabia. By siding with Iran, Biden has forced Saudi Arabia, a US ally, to act in a decidedly unfriendly manner.

Toameh explained, “Al-Sarraf said that when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed rejected Biden’s attempts to contact them, ‘it is not because they want to abandon the alliance with the US, but because they do not see a president in the White House. This president is deaf. He cannot be trusted. Going to Iran and Venezuela does not come without a without a price. They are not a real compensation for the role that the Gulf states can play in the battle for the stability of the international system.'”

“The Arabs consider Iran a lethal threat to their national security and the stability of the entire Middle East and other parts of the world,” Toameh concluded. “If the Biden administration is going to align itself with the mullahs, it will lose the support of its Arab and Muslim allies, who feel bitterly betrayed and fear that nuclear weapons will end up in the hands of these very mullahs and their terrorist groups.”

Biden’s push to sign a deal with Iran at any cost is endangering other pressing political concerns. As part of the negotiations, Russia is demanding that US sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine be lifted in order for them to agree to any deal.

If President Biden pursues the Iran deal, he will be living up to the expectations of many of his greatest detractors. Robert Gates, who served as defense secretary for the Obama administration, wrote in his memoir titled “Duty”,  that “Biden has “been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades” or, as former President Barack Obama told a Democrat regarding Biden’s nomination to run for president in 2020, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to [expletive] things up.”
