Ukraine’s president alienates Israel after comparing Russia invasion to Holocaust

A false witness will not go unpunished; He who testifies lies will not escape.

Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky was accused of trivializing the Holocaust on Sunday after addressing the Israeli Knesset via zoom. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Benett denied Ukraine arm shipments but said he would continue mediation efforts between the two warring countries.

Zelensky’s zoom address was meant to rally the Israeli government to supply Kyiv with arms to fend off the Russian invasion. But his plea fell on deaf ears after he tried to compare Russia’s invasion to the Holocaust while emphasizing the rare instances of righteous gentiles in Ukraine who aided and abetted Jews during World War 2.

“This Russian invasion of Ukraine is not just a military operation as Moscow claims,” Zelensky said. “This is a large-scale and treacherous war aimed at destroying our people; destroying our children; our families; our state; our cities; our communities; our culture; and everything that makes Ukrainians, Ukrainians. Everything that Russian troops are now destroying, deliberately, in front of the whole world.”

“That is why I have the right to make this parallel and this comparison. Our history and your history. Our war for our survival and World War II.”

Zelensky, who is of Jewish parents but baptized both his children, may have gone too far after he said in his speech: “But listen to what is sounding now in Moscow. Hear how these words are repeated: “Final solution.” But already in relation, so to speak, to us, to the “Ukrainian issue.”

He went on to offend some of Israel’s top academics after highlighting the righteous gentiles of Ukraine even though they were an extreme minority among the population of Europe’s cruelest Nazi supporters.

A prominent Israeli journalist tweeted: “Zelensky’s claim that the Ukrainians were righteous gentiles who saved Jews in the Holocaust is sick historical revisionism. The Ukrainians were active, enthusiastic Nazis. Ukrainian Jewry wasn’t annihilated in Poland, but in Ukraine, by their neighbors.”

Zelensky seemed to take a slight at Israel’s neutrality, saying: “One can keep asking why we can’t get weapons from you. Or why Israel has not imposed strong sanctions against Russia. Why it doesn’t put pressure on Russian business.”

According to  Channel 13, Bennett’s cabinet was offended by Zelensky’s critique of Israel’s policy. However, a government official who said it is a “serious disrespect to the Holocaust” clarified that Israel’s mediation efforts would continue. The official added that Jerusalem would not sell arms to Ukraine.

MK Simcha Rothman also blasted Zelensky’s comparison calling it a disgrace. Rothman said sarcastically: “Zelensky asked us to treat his country the way they treated us 80 years ago. Sorry, but we will deny his request since we are a light unto the nations.”

This isn’t the first time Ukraine’s government used the “righteous gentiles” of Ukraine argument to guilt-trip Israel into providing more assistance. Earlier in March, Israel365 News reported that Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel Yevhen Korniichuk, used the same line of reasoning saying: “Dozens of Ukrainian citizens were returned from Ben Gurion Airport to the countries they came from over the past few days,” said Korniichuk. “Thousands of Righteous Gentiles in Ukraine saved Jews during the Holocaust.”
