Dershowitz Warns Democrats Turning ‘Blind Eye’ to Anti-Semitism

Veteran jurist Alan Dershowitz has launched a scathing attack on the Democratic Party and warned that it is turning a blind eye to the growing anti-Semitism of the Social Democratic wing of the party.

The former Harvard Law School professor referenced support for the anti-Israel such Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement by some Democratic lawmakers, such as Minnesota’s congresswoman-elect Ilhan Omar. Dershowitz also highlighted the reticence of prominent Democrats, among them Democratic National Committee deputy chairman Keith Ellison to condemn Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. He warned that the Democratic Party was “tolerating” anti-Semitism.

“The Democratic Party isn’t anti-Semitic – but they are tolerating anti-Semitism on the hard left part of their base because they don’t want to alienate their base. So Keith Ellison gets elected Deputy Chairman of the Democratic National Party. And he had close associations with Farrakhan and falsely denied them,” Dershowitz said in an interview with Fox News.

Dershowitz compared the conduct of high-profile Democratic Party figures with Republican opponents across the aisle. He referred to Aretha Franklin’s memorial service in September at which Democratic Party luminary President Bill Clinton shared a stage with Farrakhan. He said that it would be unthinkable that a prominent Republican would be seen sharing the same platform along with a racist such as David Duke.

“The Democratic Party has to do a better job. The Republican Party has done a better job in ridding it[self] and condemning the anti-Semites on the hard right. Now the Democratic Party must do a better job of condemning anti-Semites on the hard left,” Dershowtiz added.

Dershowitz is a lifelong Democrat, so it is important to note that he is criticizing what he views as unacceptable behavior, from the inside. He explained that the party’s mainstream was still supportive of the State of Israel, but that the elections of figures such as Omar – who tweeted in 2012 that “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel” – raised questions about the party’s future support for Israel.

“Israel still is bipartisan among mainstream Democrats,” he said, “but when you elect people to Congress who have very strong anti-Israel views, it begins to raise questions about whether bipartisanism remain in the future.”
