Al Akhbar, a Lebanese daily newspaper affiliated with Hezbollah, accused Israel Monday of being behind Sunday night’s attack in Syria, which reportedly caused a 2.6 magnitude earthquake in the area. According to the reports, the attack targeted weapons storage facilities and army bases serving both the Syrian army and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Thirty-eight soldiers were killed in the attack, according to Syrian opposition media outlets, and 57 more wounded. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), 18 of those killed in the attack were Iranian soldiers.

Despite Hezbollah’s accusation, a Facebook page associated with Bashar al-Assad’s regime said the attacks came from American and British military bases in northern Jordan.

The incident was the latest in a series of attacks on military targets in Syria that foreign sources have attributed to Israel. On April 9, an attack on a military base near Homs which was in use by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard killed at least 14 people, including several Iranian military advisers.

In February, another attack attributed to Israel took place at the same Iranian base, following an Israeli interception of an Iranian drone launched into Israel. Iran has publicly blamed Israel for the attacks and vowed to take revenge.
