Leftist “Pro-Israel” Group Was Paid Half a Million Dollars to Help Obama Sell Iran Deal

In what has become a growing scandal surrounding the Obama administration’s self-serving promotion of a questionable nuclear deal with Iran, figures have been released showing left-wing Jewish group J-Street was paid over half a million dollars to support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), several media outlets have reported.

Earlier this month, Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes made waves when he bragged that the administration had used the media and outside groups to create an “echo chamber” and mislead the public into accepting the deal brokered by the P5+1 powers with Iran, even when official White House statements and positions did not support the facts. One such outside group, the Ploughshares Fund, recently released its 2015 figures, detailing its contributions to various outlets in order to push the Iran deal.

Citing the Associated Press, Israel National News noted that many organizations benefited from Ploughshares contributions, but chief among them was J-Street, a liberal Jewish organization which bills itself as “pro-Israel, pro-peace” while consistently taking political positions which undermine Israeli security and prosperity. J-Street, seen as President Barack Obama’s mouthpiece to the American Jewish public, received a total of $576,500 to promote the deal, despite many, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, advising against it. Netanyahu even jeopardized his standing with the White House in order to denounce the burgeoning deal in Congress last year.

Other beneficiaries of Obama administration funding through Ploughshares include a $100,000 grant to National Public Radio (NPR) to promote “national security reporting that emphasizes the themes of U.S. nuclear weapons policy and budgets, Iran’s nuclear program, international nuclear security topics and U.S. policy toward nuclear security,” $182,500 to the Atlantic Council, which “received money for Iran-related analysis, briefings and media outreach, and non-Iran nuclear work,” and $70,000 to Princeton University to support former Iranian ambassador and nuclear spokesman Seyed Hossein Mousavian’s “analysis, publications and policymaker engagement on the range of elements involved with the negotiated settlement of Iran’s nuclear program.” The Arms Control Association ($282,500), the Brookings Institution ($225,000) and the National Iranian American Council (over $281,000) also received financial backing to promote the party line.

J-Street’s support for the JCPOA and shameless promotion of it in the face of opposition, even from the Israeli left with which the organization claims to identify, is seen by the group’s critics as further proof that it is, in fact, anti-Israel. Such behavior flies in the face of the Biblical dictum not to “stand against the blood of thy neighbor” (Leviticus 19:16).
