Iran Furious as U.S. Appropriates Frozen Assets to Terror Victims

Iran threatened to take legal action in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against the United States government for a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that would allow the families of terror victims to collect compensation from frozen Iranian assets.

The U.S. is currently responsible for the preservation of the Iranian funds, most of which were released following the implementation of the Nuclear Deal negotiation in which the U.S. played a crucial role. Iran gained access to $100 billion in February as sanctions were lifted.

“We hold the U.S. administration responsible for preservation of Iranian funds and if they are plundered, we will lodge a complaint with the ICJ for reparation,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, AFP reported. Zarif continued saying that the ruling amounts to a “misappropriation of Iranian assets that runs counter to international law.”

In a 6-2 decision last week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that would enable survivors of Iranian terror attacks and their families to collect compensation from a pool of $2 billion in frozen Iranian assets. The decision affects more than 1,000 Americans from a range of Iranian-sponsored terror attacks, including the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, and the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia.

Not to be forgotten among the Iranian-sponsored terrorists are the thousands of Palestinians to whom Iran promised significant financial incentives should family members be killed while attempting to murder Israelis. Iran has explicitly expressed support for the Palestinian cause, noting that the whole of the Arab Muslim nation should unite in their goal to relieve the “oppressed” Palestinians in Israel. The ‘martyrdom severance packages’, which range anywhere from $7,000 to $30,000, have no doubt contributed to the escalation in violence throughout the ongoing terror wave in Israel.
