Rivlin, Netanyahu Welcome Romanian President, Celebrate Ties

President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Romanian President Klaus Werner Iohannis in Jerusalem on Monday,, March 7. President Iohannis, along with the two Israeli leaders, expressed willingness and determination to build upon the long-held friendship between the two countries.

“The continuous relations between the two countries are based on a tradition of 68 years of shared values ​​and traditions, which continue to develop,” noted President Iohannis after having been greeted by Rivlin.

During his meeting with the Romanian president, Prime Minister Netanyahu also gave recognition to the historic ties between Israel and Romania.

“During preparations for our meeting, I realized that Romania is the only country, the only European country, that has had diplomatic relations with Israel for 67 consecutive years,” Netanyahu said.

As mentioned by President Iohannis, the relationship was built on significant levels of bilateral cooperation in a number of areas.

“This year, we are marking 68 years of continuous diplomatic relations that rely on dynamic political dialogue and excellent cooperation in a number of fields: economy, security, culture, education, research, and many others,” the Romanian president told Netanyahu.

“I am here to express full appreciation for what our countries have achieved over decades of dialogue and cooperation and to show that we are looking optimistically to the future, towards what we can do to unleash the full potential of relations between our countries and our peoples,” continued Iohannis.

President Rivlin made note of the more recent development in ties between the countries. “In recent decades, bilateral relations have been strengthened and are reflected in trade, science, economics, and a variety of areas of cooperation,” Rivlin said.

Much of the success in the relationship between Israel and Romania appears to be due to the high value and regard in which the two countries hold each other.

“Romania places special importance to its relations with Israel, and this visit was to honor the past of our relations and reflect upon the future,” remarked the Romanian president to Rivlin, who expressed his desire to see the bilateral relationship grow.

“I came here with the desire to develop new areas of cooperation, research, science and technology with which we have major potential,” added President Iohannis.

Netanyahu concurred with President Iohannis’ intention of taking advantage of his diplomatic visit to Israel.

“I would like to use this visit as an opportunity to deepen our relationship and move towards inter-governmental consultations with the goal of ensuring that we move forward on a clear path,” Netanyahu said.

Rivlin also expressed Israel’s will to further develop its relationship with Romania. “Israel will be glad to expand cooperation in the fields of cybersecurity, agriculture, health, development and manufacturing,” Rivlin assured Iohannis.

President Rivlin also expressed gratitude to President Iohannis for his country’s political support of Israel. “I thank you for the support that you have expressed for Israel many times and cultivating the various relationships with our country,” said Rivlin to Iohannis.

President Rivlin also thanked the Romanian president for his country’s role in combating anti-Semitism.

“I want to express my appreciation to Romania for its role as head of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA),” said Rivlin. The IHRA is comprised of a coalition of countries seeking to promote and develop Holocaust education throughout the world.

“I am sure that you will continue to act decisively facing many challenges against anti-Semitism, racism, and hatred,” continued Israel’s president.
