Is There a Radical Mosque in Your Neighborhood? New Interactive Map May Hold the Answer

Both French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel have vowed to crack down on radical mosques in their home countries in the wake of the Paris attacks two weeks ago, yet the American government has failed to make similar commitments, despite evidence of home-grown radicalism.

Dismayed by this lack of action, US news publication The Daily Caller created an interactive map of radical mosques across the country, in an effort to demonstrate just how dangerous the problem is.

The map draws upon information from The Clarion Project, “an independently funded, non-profit organization dedicated to exposing the dangers of Islamist extremism while providing a platform for the voices of moderation and promoting grassroots activism,” according to its website. The group has drawn up a list of extremist Muslim organizations by state, including mosques, community centers, universities, colleges and whole communes.

In its interactive map, The Daily Caller included only those institutions whose addresses it could verify, and therefore excluded communes, such as Islamberg in New York. The 83 locations which made the cut may only be the tip of the iceberg. These 83 mosques represent some four percent of the 2,106 mosques documented in the US in 2010.

According to The Daily Caller, the mosques on the map “or their leading clerics have radicalized attendees to become terrorists, supported terrorist organizations, made radical Islamist remarks or hosted others that have, or are financially backed by radical individuals or organizations.”

One such example is Dar al-Hijrah, just outside Falls Church, Virginia, where two of the 9/11 hijackers worshipped. The mosque’s current Imam, Shaker Elsayed, has expressed ardent admiration of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna and his teachings, calling them “the closest reflection of how Islam should be in this life.” The Muslim Brotherhood is itself a radical organization, and is considered a terrorist group by Bahrain, Egypt, Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Islamic Society of Boston produced the Boston Bombers and al-Qaeda terrorists Aafia Siddiqui, Tarek Mehanna and Ahmad Abousamra.

Meanwhile, terrorism expert Rita Katz told The Washington Post in 2002, The Islamic Center of Tucson was “basically the first cell of al-Qaeda in the United States.”

When contacted by The Daily Caller, the FBI refused to acknowledge whether they had a similar watchlist of radical mosques.
