Republican Representative Says Obama’s “Getting Back” at Israel

New York Republican Representative Peter King accused US President Barack Obama of indulging in his “liberal fantasies” and “getting back” at Israel for an earlier perceived slight. He also berated the president for prioritizing global warming over fighting terrorism.

Popular website BuzzFeed reported on the King telephone interview on AM970’s John Grambling Show. “I think he has two years to go and he’s right now fulfilling all of his liberal fantasies,” King said, “and whether it was closing Guantanamo, talking about global warming, implying that those of us who are concerned about terrorism are exaggerating for some partisan purpose, whether he can finally get back at Israel for the fact that they never accepted his apology tour to Iran and the Arab countries back in 2009. He’s doing it. And he’s basically saying ‘to hell with everybody else.’”

Republicans have frequently referred to Obama’s “apology tour”, a world tour early in his first term in which he repeatedly acknowledged earlier American mistakes while praising his country’s current actions. Stops included France, Latin America, Iran and several Muslim Arab states.

King also lambasted Obama for his priorities, as expressed in an earlier interview with Vox. “To say that [global warming] is front center, that that’s more important than people being beheaded or burned to death. I mean, how can the president say if you look at what happened at 9/11, to say that potential danger from global warming is more important than saving the lives of those 3,000 people that died on 9/11 and God knows how many more have been killed since. How many more can be killed. How devastating this is.”

King has long been an outspoken opponent of Obama’s decision to close the Guantanamo prison. He also argued against holding terrorist trials in New York, saying he felt the public nature of such trials endangered the US and were financially prohibitive.
