Kerry Aims to Kick-Start Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

The Obama administration, led by US Secretary of State John Kerry, will unveil a new peace plan to kick-start negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, the Palestinian daily Al-Quds reported.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki announced on Friday that the proposal will be presented to a Palestinian delegation that are set to arrive in Washington, DC for high level talks. Palestinian and US officials will discuss failed peace talks and the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip.

The delegation, which will be led by Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, are scheduled to meet with Kerry on Monday about “the way forward for the Middle East.”

The two sides will discuss ways to end the recent outbreak of Palestinian violence in Jerusalem, despite the fact that Palestinian leaders have called for violence in the capital.

Tensions have boiled over after an assassination attempt last week by a known Islamic Jihad terrorist of a well-known Temple Mount activist, Rabbi Yehuda Glick.

Kerry phoned Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss reviving peace talks and “lowering tensions” in Jerusalem.

The US proposal consists of three main points: ending Israeli construction in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem; halting the Palestinian bid at the UN Security Council to set a timeline for Israeli withdrawal to pre-1967 borders; and resuming peace negotiations from the point where they ended last April.

The Al-Quds report stated that the US administration believes a two-state solution could be achieved. US officials believe “window for such a solution is narrowing in light of the absence of confidence between Israel and the Palestinians and rising tensions resulting from both sides’ unilateral measures.”

Palestinian leadership has threatened repeatedly to turn to international organizations to achieve an independent state. Erekat has accused Israel of imposing an “apartheid regime in the occupied Palestinian territories” and working to destroy any chance of achieving a two-state solution.

Erekat told French and German officials that Israel bears all the responsibility for ongoing tensions and the collapse of the peace process. He blamed Israel’s continued construction beyond the Green Line and the “assaults” on the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
