Hamas Rebuilding Tunnels, Rearming for Next Round of Fighting

Two weeks after the end of Operation Protective Edge, Hamas is beginning to prepare for the next round of conflict with Israel, a senior diplomatic source told Israeli media.

“They are already preparing themselves,” the source said, explaining that Israel has already detected Hamas attempting to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip.

“Hamas did not wait a single moment after the last round of fighting, and began its rearmament in anticipation of another round of fighting,” the source said.

Over the course of Operation Protective Edge, one of the main goals of the IDF was to dismantle Hamas’s extensive terror tunnel infrastructure that allowed the terror group to carry out cross border attacks.

The source confirmed that restoring the terror tunnels is already underway by Hamas as well as restocking its weapons arsenal and building up its rocket manufacturing abilities.

During the 50 day conflict, Hamas fired more than 4,500 rockets at Israel. The source estimates that Hamas and other terror groups in the Strip have a rocket making capacity of 40 percent of what it was before the war.

The official further explained that following Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012, Hamas prepared a “step-by-step” guide on how to fight Israel for the next round of conflict. The terror group is writing up yet another how-to guide following Operation Protective Edge.

Hamas has vowed that it would never agree to “disarm the resistance” against the Jewish state. Terror groups in the Strip are already building new rockets to be used in the next round of violence with Israel.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Sunday that it was “unrealistic at this time” to demand the demilitarization of Gaza.
