The jihadist terror organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) recently announced that it had established an Islamic state, claiming leadership of the world’s Muslims.

ISIS has caused complete chaos across the Middle East when last month militants belonging to the group captured Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul. The group also captured five provinces north and west of Baghdad as well as infiltrated parts of Syria, posting a tangible threat to Syrian president Bashar Assad.

The radical Islamist terror group is well known for its ruthless tactics. ISIS members have been known to publicly crucify its enemies, carry out point-blank assassinations, rape women of conquered regions, and has caused havoc throughout Iraq by utilizing suicide bombers.

ISIS’s leader, lead by self proclaimed “Caliph” Abu Backr al-Baghdadi, is backed by thousands of fighters throughout Syria and Iraq. Reports from among the militants indicate a growing trend of Westerners seeking out membership among ISIS’s ranks. ISIS has sought to attract non-Arab foreign fighters to its cause by releasing English language magazines and videos, among other recruitment tools.

Baghdadi, who has been living in hiding and has a $10 million bounty on his head, made an unprecedented public appearance in Mosul, ordering all Muslims to obey him. The footage, which has yet to be authenticated, would be the first known public recording of the vicious leader.

“The mujahedeen have been rewarded victory by God after years of jihad and they were able to achieve their aim and hurried to announce the caliphate and choose the Imam,” he said about himself, according to a translation by the Guardian.

“It is a burden to accept this responsibility to be in charge of you…I am not better than you or more virtuous than you. If you see me on the right path, help me. If you see me on the wrong path, advise me and halt time. And obey me as far as I obey God.”

Baghdadi Orders All Muslims to Obey His Rule

Western governments fear the growing threat of ISIS. The jihadist terror group is quickly surpassing al-Qaeda as the greatest radical Islamist threat today.

ISIS raids in Iraq and Syria have seized millions of dollars worth of military equipment and cash left behind by the United States. The Syrian government, aware of ISIS militants operating within its borders, reportedly bombed ISIS positions in Iraq last June. The US and Iran have even teamed up together in Iraq by conducting drone surveillance of ISIS strongholds on behalf of the weakened Iraqi government.

Jordan, aware of the growing threat posed by ISIS, has called upon the US and Israel to help protect its borders. Unable to counteract a full assault by ISIS, Jordan has begun reaching out to its allies to help bolster its military.

ISIS leaders have made clear in numerous recordings that it has trained its eye on the Hashemite Kingdom, which it deems a traitor to the West and Israel. Israeli intelligence officials are keeping a close eye on ISIS activity throughout the region.

While officials said they were “not too troubled at this stage,” Israel’s military intelligence agencies have been monitoring ISIS for over the last two years.
