Israeli defense company Elbit Systems has announced the unveiling of a new vehicle mounted mortar system called Hanit, or Spear. The Spear is the latest in a new generation of technology of the CARDOM mortar which is used by the IDF and other armies.

Part of the Recoil Mortar System (RMS) for lightweight 4×4 combat vehicles, the Spear features a low-recoil and has full autonomous abilities. Spear is a 120 mm modular mortar that can be mounted on a variety of vehicles used in the field such as jeeps and hummers. Other mortars, which have high recoil upon firing, would punch holes in the roofs of any light vehicle they are mounted on.

According to Israel Defense, “the advanced 2nd generation RMS reduces 120 mm gun barrel firing recoil loads from 30 to less than 10 tons, enabling adaptability with previously non-installable Light Combat Vehicles.” Spear is now the first RMS of its kind that “significantly improves the maneuverability and operation performance of infantry forces, as it delivers immediate indirect artillery support for effectively engaging a wide range of targets.”

The Spear can be transported in numerous ways, including transport planes, helicopters, and wheeled vehicles. The ability to maneuver more easily and be transported at quicker rates opens up a new host of possibilities in combat scenarios.

Udi Vered, Director of Elbit Ground and Teleprocessing Systems, said that Elbit Systems is “a world leader in the field of mortars, and the CARDOM mortar is already being used by the IDF and other leading militaries in the world. The Hanit system makes it possible to provide a wider solution for our clients and solidifies our leadership even more.”

“The Hanit provides a solution for operational demands for mobile, quick and precise fire, that allows for operations deep in the combat sectors, and development of special forces,” he added.
