Israeli soldiers on a mission to destroy a Hamas terror tunnel running from Gaza to Israel were attacked by Palestinian terrorists Thursday night, according to the Jerusalem Post. The IDF stated that terrorists detonated an explosive device targeting the soldiers during the operation. The attack left five soldiers injured. One is suffering from serious injuries, one was moderately wounded and three soldiers were lightly hurt, an army source said. The wounded were airlifted to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba.

According to The Times of Israel, Hamas-run TV in Gaza confirmed that its forces laid out a “sophisticated” improvised explosive device (IED) for the soldiers, adding that this was a “slap in the face to those who claim the resistance is dead,” Army Radio reported Friday morning.

The IDF responded by firing a shell at suspected terrorists, killing one gunman and injuring another. IAF aircraft also struck an attack tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip, the IDF stated. Three members of the Hamas Kassam Brigades were killed in the strike east of the town Qarara, according to Palestinian news agency Ma’an.

The IDF accused Hamas of breaking the terms of the ceasefire deal that ended Operation Pillar of Defense in December 2012.

“This mission was imperative due to the potential to utilize the terror tunnel for future attacks against Israeli civilians,” IDF spokesman Lt.-Col. Peter Lerner said. “This tunnel, similar to the one used to kill two IDF soldiers and kidnap Gilad Shalit in 2006, was built for this heinous purpose. Hamas, as the authority in the Gaza Strip, is accountable and responsible for all activities aimed at harming Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.”
