Go, my people, enter your chambers, And lock your doors behind you. Hide but a little moment, Until the indignation passes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) calls for several measures to combat the spread of monkeypox.
“The identification of confirmed and suspected cases of monkeypox without any travel history to an endemic area in multiple countries is atypical. Hence, there is an urgent need to raise awareness about monkeypox and undertake comprehensive case finding and isolation [provided with supportive care], contact tracing, and supportive care to limit further onwards transmission,” the WHO said in Geneva on Saturday.
According to the UN organization, monkeypox cases reported in Europe, North America, and Australia has primarily affected homosexual men who visited medical facilities.

The WHO predicted the likelihood of more cases emerging in other populaces and countries.
They estimated roughly 90 confirmed cases and 30 suspected infections on Saturday.
“Available information suggests that human-to-human transmission is occurring among people in close physical contact with cases who are symptomatic,” the agency said.
Monkeypox is a transmittable illness that is often mild. It is endemic in regions of central and west Africa. It can be spread via close contact. According to the WHO, it can be easily contained using measures including isolation and good hygiene.
“What seems to be happening now is that it has got into the population as a sexual form, as a genital form, and is being spread as sexually transmitted infections, which has amplified its transmission around the world,” WHO official David Heymann, an infectious disease specialist, told Reuters.

Heymann said that an international committee of experts was held via virtual meeting to examine the outbreak and communicate their findings to the public. This includes if there is any asymptomatic spread, who are high risk, and the different means of transmission.
He said the meeting was called due to the “ urgency of the situation.”

Heymann said that it was “biologically plausible” that the virus circulated outside countries where it’s endemic but added that it didn’t lead to significant outbreaks due to Coronavirus lockdowns, social distancing, and travel limitations.
He emphasized that the monkeypox outbreak didn’t look like the early days of the Coronavirus pandemic as it doesn’t transmit as quickly.
“There are vaccines available, but the most important message is, you can protect yourself,” Heymann added.
