Has Israel chosen Ukraine’s side against Russia?
Although Israel has been reluctant to take a clear side in the war between Russia and Ukraine, Israel’s Navy is currently participating in NATO’s multi-national “Noble Dina” exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, reports Israel Hayom.
The exercise was canceled in 2020 due to the covid pandemic. Israel participated in the exercise in March of 2021 in the waters southwest of Cyprus, along with vessels from the US, Cyprus, Greece, and France for a week-long exercise.
The exercise, entitled ‘Noble Dina,’ used counterterrorism scenarios and drills to defend seaports. Battleships also drilled anti-submarine maneuvers and performed search-and-rescue scenarios. The exercise also included a simulated battle between frigates. The event was also established to enhance cooperation between the western naval forces and improve their operational knowledge.
Due to increased tensions between Russia and Ukraine as Moscow feels threatened by NATO in particular, Israel considered pulling out of the exercise as the optics could be seen as taking a side in the war. However, following a discussion on the issue, IDF chief of staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi decided to participate.
Israeli warships, a submarine, and other naval forces will participate in the exercise, which is scheduled to end this weekend.
“These exercises are of paramount importance in strengthening the navy’s connection with foreign fleets who share common interests,” Rear Admiral Eyal Harel, the head of Israeli naval operations, said during last year’s exercise.
