Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau visited the Ukrainian border in Moldova on Wednesday to inspect the refugee camps and help the Jews in their journey to Israel.
Israel365 New’s Josh Wander filmed him praying for the ingathering of the exiles – the ultimate objective of his visit to Moldova. The prayer calls for the Jews that were scattered across the world and is inspired by the Book of Isaiah:
He will hold up a signal to the nations And assemble the banished of Yisrael, And gather the dispersed of Yehuda From the four corners of the earth. (Isaiah 11:12)
Rabbi Lau can be seen reading from the Torah from inside a refugee tent as is customary during Thursday morning services in the video below.
Rabbi Lau has stated his intention to establish a special beit din (religious court) whose judges will ascertain the religious status of new immigrants to Israel in light of the expected massive influx of Ukrainian refugees into the Jewish state according to a report in Israel Hayom. Many of those fleeing likely have no documentation with evidence of their Judaism. Israel365 News reported on Wednesday that Israel is readying to take in 25,000 Ukrainian refugees – the most per capita of any other country.
