Rabbi Yekutiel Fish, a prominent Jerusalem mystic, stated unequivocally that the current war in Ukraine is the precursor to the pre-Messiah War of Gog and Magog. The rabbi citedthe Midrash in Bereishis Rabbah (לך לך מ”ב, ד) which states:
Rabbi Elazar bar Avinah said, ‘If you see kingdoms taunting each other, you can anticipate the footsteps of the Messiah.” The Midrash bases this on the age of Abraham in which kings were battling each other which culminated in Abraham’s “redemption”.
“In the end of days, the nations that hate Israel will be poised to fight each other,” Rabbi Fish explained. “This is certainly the case with Russia and Ukraine, both of which have a long history of hating Jews. But the nations that hate Israel will realize that fighting among themselves will, in the end, be good for Israel. So they will get together to settle their differences so they will not fight each other but will, instead continue to kill the Jews, as they have always done. But this will not succeed. This will, of course, be due to God intervening and preventing them from harming Israel.”
“Choosing between Russia and Ukraine is difficult,” Rabbi Fish said. “Both have a long history of oppressing Jews. But in this specific case, Russia is the aggressor, transgressing the Biblical prohibition against murder. Of course, God directs the events and whether or not there will be war. But man chooses how he fits into that plan.”
“I don’t think we are in the first stages of Gog and Magog,” Rabbi Fish said. “I KNOW we are in the first stages of Gog and Magog. But Gog and Magog will be focused on Jerusalem. World War Three will precede Gog and Magog and this is what we are seeing right now, just as WWI and WWII were parts of Gog and Magog.”
“This is what we are seeing right now,” RabbiFish said. “Against all reason and logic learned from history, national leaders are trying not to antagonize Russia even when it is mobilizing its army with no sign of stopping if it conquers Ukraine. Russia is intent on conquering other lands no matter what the cost, even while the other countries inflict heavy sanctions. Russia is intent on conquering Ukraine even if it means nuclear war. ”
Rabbi Fish related this remarkable prediction in the name of the 18th-century preeminent Hassidic spiritual leader, Rabbi Shimshon (Samson) ben Mordechai of Slonim. Rabbi Shimshon was a student of Rabbi Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, an 18th-century rabbinic sage known as the Vilna Gaon, who singled out Russian aggression as a precursor to the Messiah.
“When you hear that the Russians have captured the city of Crimea, you should know that the times of the Messiah have started, that his steps are being heard,” the Vilna Gaon told his followers just before his death in 1797.
“And when you hear that the Russians have reached the city of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul), you should put on your Shabbat clothes and don’t take them off, because it means that the Messiah is about to come any minute.”
Rabbi Fish cited a section of the Jerusalem Talmud (Sotah 6a) that states that every place that licentiousness is found, there will also be found chaos. In the Talmud, the word for ‘chaos’ is anderlamusia (אַנְדַּרְלָמוּסְיָה), a very enigmatic word. Rabbi Fish noted that the word is composed of the letters “Russia Dardanelles” (רוּסְיָא דַּרְדַּנַלִּים). The Dardanelles, also known as the Strait of Gallipoli, is a narrow strait Russia must use to gain maritime access to Ukraine.
“Dardanelle also hints at the month of Adar which just began,” Rabbi Fish said.
“It must be understood that these end stages look terrifying but in the end, it will be for the good of Israel and the believers in God,” Rabbi Fish said.
