UAE’s ‘Tower of Babel’ under threat of destruction by terrorists

And on every high mountain and on every lofty hill, there shall appear brooks and watercourses—on a day of heavy slaughter, when towers topple.

Last week, the Houthis, an Iranian Shiite proxy terrorist organization in Yemen, expanded the conflict which until now has been limited to targeting Saudi Arabia by launching a missile attack against the United Arab Emirates.

Ten days ago, the Houthis launched a missile attack, the second in one week, targeting al-Dhafra airbase in Abu Dabi, UAE. The base is hosting the U.S. military. The attack, comprised of two Zulfiqar ballistic missiles was blocked by U.S.-built Patriot interceptors. The first attack on January 17 hit a fuel depot in Abu Dhabi, killing three people.

“This operation achieved our goals in these two aggressor countries,” the Yemeni Supreme Political Council was quoted as saying. “What you have seen is a blow and a turning point in our attacks.”

The Houthis also “advised” foreign investors and firms in the UAE to leave the “unsafe country”.

Following this threat, reports began circulating on the internet that the Ansar Allah movement, a part of the Houthi rebellion, had specifically threatened the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, located in Dubai. Upon its completion in 2009, the Burj Khalifa topped out at 2,722 feet, just over half a mile tall.

The Houthi threat evokes images of the 9-11 attacks in 2001 which brought down the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing 2,606 people inside the buildings.

Attacks against towers were hinted at by the Prophet Isaiah in his end-of-day vision:

And on every high mountain and on every lofty hill, there shall appear brooks and watercourses—on a day of heavy slaughter, when towers topple. Isaiah 30:25

If the Tower of Babel is taken as the Biblical archetype, destroyed because it was built to challenge heaven, Isaiah’s prophecy can be understood as a warning against the manifestation of Man’s hubris, challenging God through architectural grandiosity. In that respect, the Houthi threat can be seen as a direct challenge against the UAE’s national identity. The attack against the World Trade Center was motivated for just this reason, targeting the symbol of America’s wealth.

MISBAR, an independent Arabic factcheck platform, investigated that claim that the Houthis had threatened the Burj Khalifa and labeled it as ‘false’. While acknowledging the threats made byu the Houthis, the MISBAR refuted the threat against the Burj based on not finding such a threat attributable to the Houthis that specifically targeted the Burj Khalifa. MISBAR also noted that no evacuations in the area of the building had been ordered.
