Egypt hit with rare snow storm; Is it a realization of Isaiah’s prophecy?

I will make a road through the wilderness And rivers in the desert.

Alexandria was hit hard by a once-in-a-century snowfall on Sunday that closed schools and ports, bringing the bustling Mediterranean metropolis to a standstill.

“Bride of the Mediterranean” covered in snow

Called the “Bride of the Mediterranean” by locals, Alexandria is the largest city on the Mediterranean, the fourth-largest city in the Arab world, and the ninth-largest urban area in Africa. Ironically, some environmentalists argued on social media that the uncharacteristic cold weather in Egypt was attributable to “global warming.”

Covering sins; preparing for Messiah

A more likely explanation is brought in Isaiah who predicted that such rare weather patterns may very well be a sign of the Messianic era as the prophet Isaiah speaks repeatedly of deserts blooming in his description of the end of days.

The arid desert shall be glad, The wilderness shall rejoice And shall blossom like a rose. Isaiah 35:1

I am about to do something new; Even now it shall come to pass, Suddenly you shall perceive it: I will make a road through the wilderness And rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19

The prophet also understands snow to be a fortuitous omen that signifies God’s forgiveness.

“Come, let us reach an understanding, —says Hashem. Be your sins like crimson, They can turn snow-white; Be they red as dyed wool, They can become like fleece.” Isaiah 1:18

Snow is equated by King David with being free of sin:

Purge me with hyssop till I am pure; wash me till I am whiter than snow. Psalms 51:9

It is interesting to note that the Torah portion being read this week includes Moses encountering God at the Burning Bush. Moses requests from God a sign to convince the Hebrews the he is indeed a divinely-sent emissary. God turns his hand “snowy white” (Exodus 4:6).

Regional cold snap

The regional cold snap is expected to extend to Lower Egypt, Greater Cairo, North Upper Egypt, the cities of the Suez Canal, and the Sinai Peninsula over Sunday and Monday.

Israel is also experiencing extreme weather with the Carmel winter storm dumping rain all over the country. High winds lashed the country as the Hermon was dusted with snow.

Even heavier winds and snow are expected before the storm moves on after Wednesday.

A winter storm in 2013 brought snow to Egypt. Local media claimed it was the first snow in Cairo in 112 years. The storm caused mayhem to millions of poor and displaced people across the region, especially afflicting refugees from the Syrian conflict.

Two years ago, a rare snowstorm blanketed the mountain in the Sinai Peninsula that some Christians claim is the Biblical Mount Sinai. It is next to Mount Catherine, which, at 8,625 feet, is the highest peak in Egypt.

Alexandria’s once-flourishing Jewish community declined rapidly following the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. The community once numbered 50,000 but is now estimated at below 50. The most important synagogue in Alexandria is the Eliyahu Hanavi Synagogue.
