Ahead of his first European tour since becoming President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi offered his troops to help stabilize a nascent Palestinian state as needed. According to AFP, al-Sisi is set to visit Europe on Monday. He spoke to Italian paper Corriere della Sera Sunday.

“We are ready to send military forces into a Palestinian state,” he said. “We would help the local police and reassure the Israelis through our role as guarantor. Not forever, of course. For the time necessary to reestablish confidence. But first a Palestinian state must exist where troops can be sent to.”

Al-Sisi said he has already made this proposal to both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

Al-Sisi also spoke to the Italian newspaper about the state of affairs in neighboring Libya, which he described as “chaos”. “Extremely dangerous jihadist bases” are being established there, he said.

“The international community must make a very clear and joint choice in favor of the Libyan national army and no one else,” Sisi said. “Aid, equipment, training must be sent to it exclusively.”

Al-Sisi continued to insist that Egypt has not interfered militarily in Libya. Egypt denies accusations that it facilitated an airstrike by its ally, the United Arab Emirates, against militias in Libya.

Al-Sisi overthrew his Islamist predecessor, Mohammed Morsi, in July of 2013, amid a wave of violence which drew condemnation from around the world.  However, after winning a landslide victory in Egyptian elections and taking a leading role in combating the growing influence of Islamist extremism in the region, Egypt and al-Sisi’s diplomatic standing is improving significantly.

During his European tour, al-Sisi is set to visit both France and Italy, as well as meeting with Pope Francis in Vatican City.
