Israel has avoided another election after the coalition managed to pass the 2021 budget for the first time in over three years on Thursday morning.

After the budget passed by a vote of 61-59, Bennett tweeted: “It’s a celebratory day for the state of Israel.  After years of formlessness and desolation, we have established a government.” The Prime Minister also bragged about overcoming the Delta variant of the coronavirus and concluded by saying “Praise God we passed a budget for Israel!.”

The words used when describing the previous government were ‘Tohu vavohu’  (תוהו ובוהו), the same phrase used in the Book of Genesis to describe the chaos that existed before God created light:

the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from Hashem sweeping over the water (Genesis 1:2)

Prior to the vote, Bennett called it “the most important moment since the formation of the coalition.”

This moment didn’t come without controversy, however. Many on the right have criticized the concessions that Bennett has made to appease the Arab coalition members such as Mansour Abbas. This includes Bennett agreeing to establish four new Bedouin villages in the Negev desert.

This move was met with wall-to-wall opposition from the right who see it as political blackmail and a type of retreat from the Land of Israel. Bedouins already illegally build and occupy massive swaths of land in Israel’s south making the initiative all the more puzzling. Additionally, housing shortages for Israel”s Jewish citizens add insult to injury.

The 2022 budget is expected to pass Thursday evening.
