On October 20, the Americans for Peace Now organization will host an event marking 25 years since the assassination of late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Rabin was assassinated in 1995 following his signing of the infamous Oslo Accords.
Among those invited was New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a fierce opponent of Israel. AOC backed out of the memorial event honoring Rabin.
The congresswoman was scheduled to participate in the October 20th virtual event, which is being hosted by Peace Now to mark the 25th anniversary of Rabin’s assassination. But AOC cancelled her attendance following backlash on social media.
Among the critics was a writer from the far left Jewish Currents magazine who tweeted: “So @AOCis doing a memorial event for Yitzhak Rabin. In the US Rabin is viewed as a liberal peacemaker but Palestinians remember him for his brutal rule suppressing Palestinian protest during the First Intifada, as someone who reportedly ordered the breaking of Palestinian bones”
Implying that she was duped, AOC responded saying: “Hey there – this event and my involvement was presented to my team differently from how it’s now being promoted. Thanks for pointing it out. Taking a look into this now.”

Following a flurry of more tweets from pro-Palestinian users pressuring her to back out, the Adalah Justice Project confirmed that she cancelled her attendance.
It’s official. @AOC has withdrawn her participation from an event memorializing Yitzhak Rabin. His legacy is one of violence and dispossession for Palestinians. Thank you AOC for listening to the lived experience of the Palestinian people.

Jeremy Ben-Ari, the president of pro-Palestinian lobbying group J Street objected to Occasio-Cortez’s decision to back out. Ben-Ami took to Twitter writing: “I am hurt and troubled by @aoc decision to withdraw her participation and urge her to reconsider.

For several years, J Street denied receiving any funding from George Soros’ Open Society Foundation until The Washington Times revealed the connection in 2010. J Street received roughly one-third of its revenue from billionaire Jewish left-wing financier George Soros as a three-year, $750,000 beginning in 2008. The revelation of the connection to notoriously anti-Israel Soros was considered damaging to JStreet, dispelling the myth that it was a pro-Israel organization.
