Congresswoman Ilhan Omar appears to be adding credibility to the theory that the Minnesota representative is Erdogan’s agent in Washington. After all, why would an alleged champion of “full human rights” refuse to recognize one of the history’s most gruesome acts of ethnic cleansing – the Armenian Genocide?

That’s precisely what the freshmen congresswoman did on Tuesday when she was just one of two Congresswomen to vote “present” during a motion seeking to recognize the Armenian Genocide which was perpetrated by Turkey’s predecessors, the Ottoman Empire reports the Daily Mail.

Following Turkey’s incursion into Syria, the House voted on a bill that included sanctions against Turkey for their invasion. The bill also included the recognition of the genocide which occurred between 1914-1923 whereby approximately 1.5 million ethnic Armenians were either killed or ethnically cleansed from the Ottoman Empire. The Armenians were Christian while the Ottomans, who perpetrated the genocide were Muslim.

This is a rather ironic move for someone who claimed that the United States was “founded on genocide“. None-the-less, the motion passed an overwhelming 405 to 11.

Turkey’s foreign ministry blasted the bill saying that it is “devoid of any historical or legal basis.” On Wednesday, Turkey summonsed the US ambassador over the motion.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that she was honored to join her colleagues “in solemn remembrance of one of the great atrocities of the 20th century: the systematic murder of more than 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children by the Ottoman Empire”.

Turkish NBA player and anti-Erdogan advocate Enes Kanter took to Twitter to blast Omar’s decision. The Boston Celtics center tweeted: “What an absolute disappointment and shame that the only democrat who did NOT support the Turkish bill aiming to stop the killing of innocent people is @IlhanMN who seems like on #DictatorErdogan ‘s payroll working for his interests, but not for the American people and democracy!”
