PLO Decides to Suspend Recognition of Israel

On Monday night, the PLO’s Central Council said it had suspended the recognition of the State of Israel until Israel recognizes the State of Palestine along the 1967 borders.

It also called for a halt to security coordination with all Israeli security forces in all its forms, as well as a halt to economic ties with Israel.
The series of decisions presented by the Council will be submitted to the approval of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and to the PLO committees to oversee their implementation.

This means that Abbas will decide on the implementation of the recommendations, and he is not obligated to do so within a specific time frame.

In response to the PLO’s decision, Diaspora Affairs Minister Naftali Bennett, who sits on the Security Cabinet, said on Tuesday that “the Palestinians have never been serious about recognizing Israel.

“They have always been planning to destroy Israel piece by piece and throw the Jews out of our land,” he said. “The charade has ended. They have shown their true colors – the Palestinians are not interested in peace and never have been.”

Finance Minister and Security Cabinet member Moshe Kahlon told Army Radio that the PLO’s recommendations were “concerning.”

“This is a serious mistake,” Kahlon said. “In the past year, Ramallah has been intensifying and radicalizing and torpedoing any attempt to regulate.”

He added that their desire to starve Gaza is disturbing. “They do not miss an opportunity to make a mistake, it’s worrying, they continue in this direction and pull the rope, trying to complicate the region.

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said on Twitter the PLO’s decision “is a bad joke.

“They cannot recognize the sun, the invention of the wheel and gravity,” he wrote. “We have established a magnificent country here, with our own hands, and without asking anyone.

“We will continue to build a strong and secure Israel and when the Palestinians decide to recognize reality, they’re welcome to call,” Lapid added.

During Monday night’s PLO Central Council meeting, several other resolutions were also adopted including that Hamas bears full responsibility for the failure of the agreements signed between the parties and for the failure to reach reconciliation talks.

In addition, the council also “recognized the refusal of Abbas and the Executive Committee to agree to ‘the [peace] deal of the century’ presented by the US, as well as it considering that the American administration is part of the problem and not part of the solution.”

In addition, the council members “emphasized adherence to the right of the Palestinian people to oppose Israel by all means and in accordance with international law.”
