When people usually visit Israel, there is usually a wish list of places they want to go, historic and religious sites they want to see, as well as tasting some deliciously authentic Israeli food. This past week, one of country music’s biggest names visited the Holy Land and made an unusual pit-stop during his trip.

Ricky Skaggs, who has won 14 Grammy awards, stopped by a Jerusalem blood donation center last week and gave a piece of himself (literally) to help save those in need in Israel. “I’d love to give blood for my brethren of Israel,” Skaggs explained.

Skaggs partnered up with Heart to Heart, an organization that has coordinated blood donations of thousands of American Jews and Christians while visiting Israel. What many people do not realize is that the most valuable gift anyone can give back to the Land of Israel is not necessarily always money, but rather giving of themselves to help save the lives of others. Each unit of blood donated can save up to three lives.

What is most unique about Heart to Heart’s blood donating program are the two different levels of giving. The first level is the literal giving of blood which supports all Israelis, regardless of race or nationality. The second level is for those who are not able to physically come to Israel to give the gift of life. Heart to Heart has created the world’s first virtual blood donation program which allows people from all over the world to save lives in Israel by sponsoring a unit of blood.

When speaking about the recent blood donation of Skaggs, Heart to Heart Director Jonathan Feldstein said: “When I first met Ricky, we started talking about blood uniting Jews and Christians and I was overcome at how immediate and effusive his response was. He didn’t hesitate to say yes. He stood up as a leader, almost in a biblical way, and said, ‘I’m in!’ The growing outpouring of support is heartwarming.”

Israel’s national blood supply is a precious commodity. Feldstein reiterated that any level of donation to Heart to Heart is used to literally rescue those who need saving in Israel.

“Heart to Heart provides direct tangible support to the Israel national blood center to be sure that Israel always has a safe and plentiful blood supply,” Feldstein explained.  “The need in Israel is especially great so it’s especially meaningful when Christians with a heart for Israel like Ricky and Sharon Skaggs stand up and lead by example.  The blessing for Israel is direct and immediate, and we know God also promises that those who bless Israel will be blessed.”
